Nassau Bay Baptist Church is pleased to host the musical trio Page CXVI June 30. The indie band, whose name is drawn from the pages of C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, seeks to “make hymns accessible and known again.” Their unique folk influenced arrangements of centuries-old hymns are a testimony to the timeless nature of music in the church and the truth that all things can be made new.
The band will take part in the morning worship service at 10:30am and perform a concert at 6pm in the NBBC sanctuary, 18131 Nassau Bay Dr., Houston. The concert is free and open to the public.
Inspiration for the band’s name came from a copy of Lewis’s prequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” In a particular edition of The Magician’s Nephew, on page 116 (Page CXVI), the central character, Aslan – the Christ figure throughout the book series – sings Narnia into existence.
Just as Aslan beckoned Narnia into creation with song band members Reid and Latifah Phillips and Dann Stockton said they were drawn from their roles as church worship leaders to perform as Page CXVI. Their website biography states they “could not deny the strong beckoning of the hymns.”
Their desire to reintroduce hymns to old and young audiences drives their creative efforts. “Lullabies,” their first album, is a peaceful yet moving rendition of enduring favorites including “Peace like a River,” “Jesus Loves Me,” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Their albums also feature original songs.
Subsequent albums continue the theme with “Hymns,” “Hymns I, II, III, IV,” and “Re-Hymns.” The band is currently raising funds for a series of four albums featuring worship hymns central to the liturgical church calendar.
