Galveston residents displaced from the island by Hurricane Ike will still be able to vote in the Nov. 4 election. Because 10 of Galveston’s usual polling places were damaged during the storm, voters who can make it to the island on Nov. 4 might have to cast their ballots in a different location. If cannot make it back to the county on Election Day can request a ballot by mail. You can fill out the request form online at www.galvestonvotes.org or ask for one by calling 409-766-2200.

International Walk to School Day is today. Parents said the idea is catching on because of rising fuel costs and cutbacks being made in some school districts, which have resulted in the consolidation or elimination of some bus stops. The idea of International Walk to School Day originated in the United Kingdom and caught on in the United States in 1997.

More than a third of the heaping piles of debris in front Houston households have yet to be touched. And, may not be for at least another week. Solid waste officials and contractors say the process has taken a few days more than originally envisioned. The total volume in the city and county is staggering, possibly as high as 12 million cubic yards, or enough to fill up the Astrodome more than six times.
