One of my best friends did something I am not sure I could do.  He purposefully made himself homeless just to feel the hopelessness of being on the streets.  He is the morning show host at KXOJ in Tulsa.  I am not sure if he succeeded in truly knowing what it was like, because you probably wouldn’t know unless you where actually on the streets for at least a month.  Anyhow, after listening to the reports it sounds like he got a good feeling of what it would be like even after a couple of days.  Listen to his reports of what it was like… it was very compelling.
