How to eat Organic for le$$!
Today on the show I had a caller who asked about how to eat organic without breaking the bank. Jordan Rubin says there are many ways to eat right without spending too much, and that he will be talking about it at the Perfect Weight America Seminar.
In the meantime, there are things I can tell you that will help.
I’ve been doing this (eating organic and healthy) for about 18 months. One thing I have learned: local farmers markets are a big money saver and because the produce they sell is local and fresh it is so much healthier. When we eat what is seasonal, we are supporting our community and economy. If you really want grapes out of season they are going to come from Chile, not from Houston. We want as much of our dollars to stay local to support our local farmers.
There are many farmers markets; probably one near you. It is at these markets that I find great produce and sometimes meat, cheese, and fresh eggs. I go to one on the Rice University campus on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 6, or sometimes on Saturday morning in Katy at La Canterra off of Hwy 99/Grand Parkway, from 8:30am-Noon. But there are others. The other great thing about farmers markets is that if you are a regular customer, you can “bargain.” I have several people that know me and give me a good deal because I buy 5 or more things from them each time I go. To find a farmers market near you, go to www.localharvest.org
Many of the warehouse clubs are starting to offer deals on organic products also.
In addition, I have discovered the value of co-ops. There are plenty of people who are fed up with high costs of food in grocery stores and they have figured out how to buy things directly from the supplier. Cutting out the middle man saves money. Here’s one co-op in the Katy area I know of that offers home delivery: www.txgardensanctuary.org.
Many of these co-op managers only charge a $5 per order fee; which is much less than what you would pay in gas to get to the store and back. There are grocery co-ops, milk co-ops, meat co-ops. Each of them work differently; check with each manager before ordering. Sometimes if your co-op or buying club doesn’t make a case of something, you don’t get it. To find a good grocery buying club, go to www.morningsidebuyingclubs.com.
Also, you can now order things by the case and have it shipped to you through this website; www.morningsideorganics.com.
If you want to find a good meat co-op, go to www.localharvest.org/food-coops.
Money is a big argument with people looking at buying organics these days. That was my main problem with buying organic. Prices are outrageous. But, you can outsmart the $$ if you know where to shop and educate yourself. Plus you will spend less on doctor bills. I haven’t been sick in a long time. I think I have only had one bout of sinus problems since I started this–and I attribute that to putting honey in my coffee every morning rather than sugar. (yeah, it took some getting used to)
