It was established in Georgia 28 years ago, by Reverend Joe Hunter. He’s a former trucker. Reverend Hunter likes to describe his chapels as “spiritual gas stations.” He says they’re a place where truckers can stop to pray, grab a tape-recorded sermon, and feel better about themselves before heading back out on the road. That kind of detachment leads many truckers to feelings of loneliness, thoughts of suicide, and guilt. Hunter says without spiritually healthy truckers, the highways aren’t as safe.
