Sneaky Ways Stores Get You to Spend

Watch out! Stores are trying to trick you into spending more money! Here is a list of sneaky ways stores get you to spend more. If you keep these in mind the next time you go shopping, chances are, you’ll be able to keep your money IN your wallet. This comes from Forbes.com. For example:

  • Don’t be fooled by signs for sales and special promotions. If a sign says “Buy one coat, and get a second coat for half price” – but you only need ONE coat – then you’re wasting money if you buy the second coat. No matter how cheap it is.
  • About 90% of people are right-handed. So retailers strategically set up stores for customers to walk around counter-clockwise. Why counter-clockwise? Because this leaves your RIGHT hand closest to merchandise at all times and if you touch something, you’re more likely to buy it.
  • Another trick stores use to try and get you to spend: Baskets. We’ve told you before to skip the shopping cart because a lot of people shop until their cart’s full. BASKETS can be a problem, too! Why? Because if you only need one or two items – but you grab a basket – you might be tempted to fill it. Just like with the shopping cart situation. So if you only need a couple of things, leave the basket at the door.
  • Have you ever noticed that most clearance sections are located at the back of the store – so you have to walk through the whole place? Not a coincidence. The more things you pass by – and the longer you stay in the store – the more money you’re likely to spend.
  • Here’s a trick that LADIES might want to know about: That couch or chair your husband sits on while you shop isn’t just a place for them to rest after following you around the store for hours. If there’s a place for your sweetheart to sit, they’ll be less likely to rush you out of the store. Which means YOU can spend more time browsing – and that’ll leads to more BUYING!

Here’s another strategy that many folks are not aware of…Notice that music playing in the background? Depending on where you are (grocery store, department store, restaurant, etc.), and the time of day, music plays a big part in how long you are there and how much you spend. For example, in the grocery store or a department store, the music is ‘elevator music’, slow and relaxing, causing you to walk more slowly, and by spending more time in the store, you ultimately spend more money. But if it’s a Friday or Saturday night at your favorite restaurant, you’ll notice the music is very up-beat — to move you along (you order, eat faster, and then they can clear the tables and seat more people — and ultimately make more money — while you go home with indigestion because you ate so quickly!).
