After Dark at KSBJ

The dark of night hosts a whole other world at KSBJ – in a good way. Valuable ministry and service takes place while most of us sleep. Many may not be aware of the ‘dark side’ of KSBJ’s ministry and the joy that comes in the morning as a result.

Duane – KSBJ’s Overnight Show Host – is the second original overnight personality in KSBJ’s 35 year history. August 1st will celebrate his 26th year with the ministry.

What motivates someone to remain so committed for so long in the shadows of unsung night hours?

The answer Duane says is pretty easy. “I’m just fulfilling the calling the Lord has placed on my life. Without His calling, I doubt I would have lasted 6 months. The hours alone are pretty grueling, and living two separate lives with my wife has been challenging. From the very beginning, she has recognized the calling and has been very supportive.” The Lord was always preparing Duane from the time he entered Broadcast school and worked for 3 secular stations. Everything came together in 1988 when he had a radical conversion and confessed his faith in God to a friend that was dying from cancer. Duane was offered the overnight position at KSBJ in 1993.

Seeking direction from the Lord when he first began, God spoke John 12:32, “And if I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to Myself!” This has been the foundation and drive for Duane’s approach until this day. “The focus has always been on the Lord…It’s so easy to get sidetracked, but as long as I keep Him the focus, He does the rest.”

Prayer and ministry have been the centerpiece and door in allowing Duane to lead countless listeners to Christ. With sensitivity and passion, Duane gives regular opportunity for salvation on air. “I try to give an invitation to receive Christ every night. Over the years, I’ve had many call or email that they prayed with me, but I will never know exactly how many actually did unless the Lord reveals that to me. I’m grateful that many have prayed for me over the years.” The opportunity to reach more souls opened up with the advent of the internet in the mid-nineties. Duane now receives prayer requests and praise reports from around the world and believes KSBJ is helping to fulfill Matt 24:14. “This Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

Some believe Jesus prayed most at 3:00 a.m. Duane has held a big prayer break at that time for many years, and the Lord has done countless miracles from healing bodies to restoring marriages and families. Duane solicits and gathers prayer requests and praise reports to lift up, and he encourages listeners to join in at 3:00 a.m. Now that KSBJ can be accessed worldwide, there are many around the world who do. Duane presents the prayers to God.

One memorable story Duane cherishes is when a mother called who had a child with a dangerously high fever. He had her go get the child, and they prayed together. The Lord took away the fever instantly! (Duane still has the audio.) The same thing happened years earlier with his own daughter.

Duane feels blessed to be given such a great opportunity and responsibility to work at KSBJ – God’s radio station. “I’m thankful for Tim McDermott, Buddy Holiday, Tom Carter and the many program directors that believed in what God is doing in the overnight! I’m most thankful for Jesus. Without Him, I could do nothing!”

Originally from Arizona, Duane studied at the RB Broadcasting School. Duane has been married for over 30 years to his wife, Sharon. They have one daughter, Sarah, a terrific son-in-law, Matthew, and three precious grandchildren.
